(K)Ubuntu 10.04 Filezilla 3.3.1 Crashes

After updating my HTPC / general use computer to 10.04, I noticed Filezilla crashing every time I tried to scroll or go into a remote folder.

After some research using Google, which resulted in nothing, I decided to look into this problem a little deeper. I started by looking through the logs which yielded nothing either. I removed Filezilla with and without purge(purge should delete all of the files used by Filezilla) this also didn’t fix my problem.

Next I deleted the ~/.filezilla folder, a hidden folder in my home directory also know as ~, this fixed the problem. If you would like to keep the folder then just rename the folder:
mv ~/.filezilla ~/filezilla_OLD

This fixed the problems with Filezilla crashing for me. If this worked for you then please leave a comment below. If it didn’t work please leave a comment as well so I can help you fix it.

Kubuntu 10.04 LTS Released Today

As I’m writing this my laptop is upgrading from 9.10 to the new 10.o4 LTS version of Kubuntu. Kubuntu released the new version today.(this also goes for Ubuntu and Edubuntu as well as Xubuntu).

Go here to download the new version or use the update manager to upgrade. Make sure you do all the updates on your current version of Kubuntu or Ubuntu first. This goed for 8.04 & 9.04 LTS releases and any other release in between.

In the past updates like this could cause problems when doing them right at the time of release. It was common to find unreachable Ubuntu servers when upgrading causing an update to not work at all, or to just download some of the files and install a broken version of Kubuntu.

This seems to be resolved when I started the upgrade no time outs to Ubuntu servers were reported. Although the upgrade is downloading slow even on a fast broadband connection.

The only thing I now have to worry about is will everything work like it did after the upgrade.

I also have a few servers to upgrade which is usually what the LTS(Long Term Support) version is used for. As well as a few clients who are also on the LTS version.

Keep an eye on this blog for my report on how Kubuntu 10.04 LTS is working after the upgrade.

Why Netflix Sucks

In February I decided to act on a free trial offer. This offer was for a free trial for a month. I have always wondered if Netflix would be for me.

During this trial I found out it isn’t. I opted to use the $8.99 a month subscription. Two DVD’s out at a time and unlimited streaming of movies and TV shows. I was kinda exited to see I could stream movies to all of my PC’s. Especially because I have a HTPC(Home Theater PC) hooked up to our TV. So this should work just like movies on-demand right?

WRONG for some unknown reason Netflix chooses to use Silverlight by Microsoft. In Linux we do have an Linux version of Silverlight called Moonlight which is developed by Novell how ever Moonlight how ever is a few version behind. Silverlight uses DRM and DRM in Moonlight seems to be a problem. The precise details of the why there is still no DRM in Moonlight are only known to Microsoft and Novell. But I imagine it has something to do with either copyright or patents that Microsoft owns.

It is still easier for company’s to get the rights to distribute when DRM is involved. This means that Netflix just decided to either take the easy route or decided they didn’t want to pay the price for DRM free content.

Which ever it is they now use technology for streaming that doesn’t support Linux.

In this case Netflix get’s a big F.

Netflix needs to know that as Linux users we are unsatisfied with this. In order to accomplish this Michael G. Paez started a petition at petitiononline.com:

Wpa_supplicant in /etc/network/interfaces and Karmic Koala 9.10

Most of you know that Karmic Koala 9.10 released on the 29th October. I noticed during my test run with Alpha’s and Beta’s of Karmic that my use of wpa_supplicant as described in this article didn’t work any more.

The lines in /etc/network/interfaces have changed from:

wpa-conf /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf
wpa-driver wext

to:

pre-up wpa_supplicant -Dwext -iwlan0 -c/etc/wpa_supplicant.conf -B
post-down killall -q wpa_supplicant

Also if you where using :

wpa_supplicant -Dndiswrapper -iwlan0 -c/etc/wpa_supplicant.conf -B

then this now has to be changed to:

wpa_supplicant -Dwext -iwlan0 -c/etc/wpa_supplicant.conf -B

Or you will get a “Unsupported driver ndiswrapper” error. I’m sure I will come across more that doesn’t work I will post the solutions as I find them.

New Design

Why?

I decided madberry.org needed a new design. Please hang in there as I fix small errors that have occurred because of this design update. I should have most of them worked out by tomorrow.

Problem With Code

At the moment I have a problem with all code in the website. The code cannot be copied. I am working to fix this problem right now.

Slow Loading

Website seems to be loading slow. I’m turning of some plugins and revising some Javascript in the site to speed it up.

Website Downtime Once Again

Once again I’m experiencing down time. This time a problem with the PS servers backup script is causing problems for several PS servers on Dreamhosts network. They say it’s fixed. However I’m still getting 500 error and Database connection problems. I’m hoping this will clear in the next couple of hours.

Karmic Koala 9.10 The First Alpha Is Here

Leaving the release of Jaunty Jackalope behind. It’s time to welcome our new baby to the stage. This new version will be called Karmic Koala and will carry version number 9.10.

Today Alpha One is released and traditionally this is only an alternate. No live cd’s yet.

The Karmic Koala Promise

For Karmic Koala the cloud concept will be worked out more and Canocial is promising an OS that will use near to zero watts when in idle mode. The look is said to change as well. A rumor has been started that the brown will finally be ditched. With a new smooth flicker free start-up and the new development kernel mode settings that it will bring, it might give us a totally new start-up environment. With the new graphical boot, the login experience will also get a work over in its look.

More speed improvements are promised as well. The Jaunty netbook version starts in 25 seconds. Canocial wants to improve this. The new version will include the newest and latest Moblin technology.

The new desktop should have a designers touch all over it. Which should make me happy. I’m not sure if it will make me switch from Kubuntu to Ubuntu. But I will take a close look at it when, the first Live CD is released.

Updated graphics drivers for Ubuntu 9.04

If you have an A205-S5825 then you probably have an Intel graphics card. It also means you possibly have had some problems on Jaunty Jackalope 9.04. Read the following story and digg it if you have a Intel graphics card.

Ubuntu users can install updated driver versions for graphics hardware by Intel, AMD/ATI and other vendors, from a special repository. This may allow the owners of integrated Intel graphics hardware to solve some of the problems encountered with these chips under the current version of Ubuntu.

Truecrypt Releases New Version 6.2

Truecrypt, a great application to encrypt file partitions and entire devices. A new version had been released. This version covers the following improvements and new features. From the website:

New Features:
The I/O pipeline now uses read-ahead buffering, which improves read performance especially on solid-state drives, typically by 30-50%. (Windows)
Improvements, Bug Fixes, and Security Enhancements:
The boot loader now supports motherboards with BIOSes that reserve large amounts of base memory (typically for on board RAID controllers). Note: In order to be able to take advantage of this improvement under Windows Vista, you will have to install Service Pack 1 or higher first. Service Pack 1 for Windows Vista resolved an issue causing a shortage of free base memory during system boot. (Windows Vista/XP/2008/2003)
Mounting using the ‘Auto-Mount Devices‘ feature may take significantly less time as partitions containing unencrypted files systems are now skipped. (Windows)
When volumes that are mounted as read-only or removable are saved as favorite volumes. They are mounted as read-only and/or removable when ‘Mount Favorite Volumes‘ is used.
When a multiple-pass wipe algorithm is selected when performing in-place encryption of a non-system volume, the header areas will be wiped before the encrypted headers are written to the disk. Note: On an existing volume, you can perform such an operation by changing its password and/or key files. (Windows)
Many other minor improvements, bug fixes and security enhancements. (Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux)

Keeping personal and corporate files saved is important. Truecrypt is a great way to protect these files. If you haven’t checked it out yet, you should do it now. Truecrypt is compatible with Linux, Mac OS X and Windows.

Want To Boot Linux From A Flash Drive?

I have tried a lot of different Linux distro’s, they all have iso’s you can put on a CD. But this would take a crazy number of CD’s. There are ways to put a distro on a USB flash drive yourself see pendrivelinux.com. What if you just don’t want to bother with installing different pieces of software to get the USB flash drive to boot?

Unetbootin Install Linux Distro’s On A Flash Drive With Out Hassle

After burning a million CD’s I decided to search for a better solution. I found Unetbootin. Unetbootin will automatically download and install Linux iso’s to your USB flash drive. I’m always looking for applications that make my life easier. Unetbootin saves me the time of having to burn every distro I want to try to disk. Let’s face it, we are still in an economic crisis and saving money is a good thing.

Installation

There are two ways to install Unetbootin. You can install it out of the repositories using Synaptic or adept. But this will to allow you to install the latest version of Kubuntu Jaunty Jackalope 9.04. For that you have to install the version you can download from their website. For the website version there is no install necessary. The download is a executable file. Download the file and make it executable make sure you are in the directory you downloaded it to:
In terminal:

sudo chmod +x ~/Desktop/unetbootin-linux*

Or the point and click way:
Right click on unetbootin-linux-323 and select properties. Click the Permissions tab mark the box in front of Is executable. Now you are able to click on the binary. A password prompt will pop-up put in your sudo password. Unetbootin will start and you are ready to make bootable flash drives.

Features

You can select a distribution to put on the flash drive as said, this will download and install the distro to the flash drive. Select an iso that you have already downloaded and install that to the flash drive. Or make a custom Kernel install with your own Initrd and options. Select the drive (it also can install distros to the hardrive) and click OK. Unetbootin will now download the iso, then install it to the flash drive.

Conclusion

Unetbootin is a great application. The only thing I wish it had out of the box, is support for multiple distro’s. It does have a boot manager so it should not be to difficult to support. I might be able to figure out how to do this. If so I’ll write another blog post about it.

madberry.org should be available again a few hours after the move. Depending on how fast the DNS servers you are using update it could take up to 72 hours before madberry.org is reachable for you.

Adobe Air On Jaunty Jackalope 9.04

Introduction

The most known Adobe Air applications out there is TweetDeck which is an application for tweeting and receiving twitter updates on your desktop. But there are a lot more handy apps on the Adobe Air Marketplace.

Installation

To install Adobe Air go to the Adobe Air website and download the Adobe Air installer. I would advise to download it to the desktop this will make it easier for you to run the next couple of commands.

1. Run this command to make the file executable:

sudo chmod +x ~/Desktop/AdobeAIRInstaller.bin

2. Run:

~/Desktop/./AdobeAIRInstaller.bin

The Adobe Air installer will now start. Follow the instructions on the screen and finish the installation.

That’s it you’re ready to install some air apps now.

TweetDeck beta 0.25 to install click the download button on the website this button will only work when Adobe Air is installed.

Ebay Desktop download and install here. I love Ebay. Ebay desktop gives you a nice interface with Ebay in mind. Search Ebay, watch items then bid and win….Now I can win even more items lol…

Jaunty Jackalope 9.04 Upgrade Woes

Introduction

If you are following me on Twitter then you already know. My wife decide when the upgrade from 8.04 to 9.04 when the pop-up showed up on her laptop to upgrade right away. This was on Thursday the day that 9.04 was released. This should not have been a problem. However this blog post wouldn’t be here, if it would have worked.

What Went Wrong

I can only speculate, but I believe that the Canocial server were overloaded with everyone doing updates. As a result of this, one of the update servers became unreachable. Resulting in an incomplete upgrade. The following error came up after the laptop restarted:

gave up waiting for root device. common problems
-boot args (cat/ proc/cmdline)
-check rootdelay=(did the system wait lon enough?)
-check root=did the system wait for the right device?)
-missing modules(cat /proc/modules;
ls/dev)
Alert! /dev/disk/by-uuid/be80cf42-e6f2-466c-bb73-7d664956a334 does not exist dropping to a shell

The laptop would not start up Kubuntu. No matter which solution (there are a few out there) I tried.

The Solution

Well not really so much of a solution, but it fixed the problem. The only way to fix it was to reinstall Jaunty Jackalope. Luckily we have a separate home partition thus saving all the important personal files and settings. The clean install went just fine. After fixing the fstab to point to the home partition, a few problems surfaced. Often when upgrading the settings stored in the home folder change as well. Also when pointing to the old setting in the home partition some problems with Kontact and the desktop icons as well as some other apps needed to be fixed.

After fixing those, then reinstalling all apps that had disappeared and installing the correct video drivers to get compiz to work right (we all love the eyecandy lol). It is again working fine.

Took The Plunge Jaunty Jackalope Kubuntu 9.04 On Laptop

Introduction

After a problem with the Kubuntu update to KDE 4.2, the laptop reinstalled the desktop all together, I’m now running the first Jaunty Jackalope Beta. I like contributing back to the community, most of you already know this see my articles and previous work in here. Installing a beta version and using it on a production box does take some guts.

How Did It Go?

If you have ever installed a beta product of anything then you know that instability is almost a given. I started the installation of Jaunty on a clean HDD on Friday. Then decided to do the rest of my configuration over this past weekend. I take a little longer setting up my own boxes because I am precise about how stuff is installed.

I also choose for ext4 instead of the more standard ext3 just to be daring even more lol.

First impression

The new version of Kubuntu is faster just as promised. Jaunty cuts my startup time by I would say 25%. The Desktop look great. I am however still missing some stuff on Jaunty. Digikam to name one is still absent. The promised version 10 did not get included into Jaunty. This makes me sad because it’s such a great piece of software that really is missed by me. For those who do not know Digikam is photo management software. I take a lot of digital photo’s and I use Digikam on a daily basis.

The Nitty Gritty

Everything seems to be working okay. Even my wireless card (AR242X) is now recognized in Jaunty. The wireless network is seen and can be connected to using network manager out of the box, GREAT!! I did try to upgrade rather than do a clean install. However it did become apparent that a clean install was needed. I would consider this a tip for everyone having these strange problems of Kmail loosing accounts. These kind odd errors are the result of lingering OLD configuration files.

In the previous version of Kubuntu (8.10) I had the problem that after a suspend or hibernate my laptop would overheat because of the fact that the CPU fan wouldn’t switch on. Jaunty (9.04) also fixes this issue.

Plasma is even better with an actual usable system monitor. Although I find that some of the plasmoids are missing configuration options. The new LCD weather station is cool but unusable. The data sources used don’t have any US city’s so nice but I don’t want to know the weather in London.

That Was Short

Yes but you can see this as a first impression article. There will be more to follow as soon as I run into problems.

At the moment I’m in a Hospital my wife. See my personal blog me.madberry.org. I am not able to work at the moment. But should be able to again next week. I have been thinking up some new ideas one of which is remote control. If been test driving Boxee for a Bright Hub article. I want to know what remotes work with Boxee. So ‘m buying some on Ebay.
