After updating my HTPC / general use computer to 10.04,  I noticed Filezilla crashing every time I tried to scroll or go into a remote folder.

After some research using Google, which resulted in nothing, I decided to look into this problem a little deeper.  I started by looking through the logs which yielded nothing either.  I removed Filezilla with and without purge(purge should delete all of the files used by Filezilla) this also didn’t fix my problem.

Next I deleted the ~/.filezilla folder, a hidden folder in my home directory also know as ~, this fixed the problem.  If you would like to keep the folder then just rename the folder:
mv ~/.filezilla ~/filezilla_OLD

This fixed the problems with Filezilla crashing for me.  If this worked for you then please leave a comment below.  If it didn’t work please leave a comment as well so I can help you fix it.

Go here to download the new version or use the update manager to upgrade. Make sure you do all the updates on your current version of Kubuntu or Ubuntu first. This goed for 8.04 & 9.04 LTS releases and any other release in between.

In the past updates like this could cause problems when doing them right at the time of release. It was common to find unreachable Ubuntu servers when upgrading causing an update to not work at all, or to just download some of the files and install a broken version of Kubuntu.

This seems to be resolved when I started the upgrade no time outs to Ubuntu servers were reported. Although the upgrade is downloading slow even on a fast broadband connection.

The only thing I now have to worry about is will everything work like it did after the upgrade.

I also have a few servers to upgrade which is usually what the LTS(Long Term Support) version is used for. As well as a few clients who are also on the LTS version.

Keep an eye on this blog for my report on how Kubuntu 10.04 LTS is working after the upgrade.

During this trial I found out it isn’t.  I opted to use the $8.99 a month subscription.  Two DVD’s out at a time and unlimited streaming of movies and TV shows.  I was kinda exited to see I could stream movies to all of my PC’s.  Especially because I have a HTPC(Home Theater PC) hooked up to our TV.  So this should work just like movies on-demand right?

WRONG for some unknown reason Netflix chooses to use Silverlight by Microsoft.  In Linux we do have an Linux version of Silverlight called Moonlight which is developed by Novell how ever Moonlight how ever is a few version behind.  Silverlight uses DRM and DRM in Moonlight seems to be a problem.  The precise details of the why there is still no DRM in Moonlight are only known to Microsoft and Novell.  But I imagine it has something to do with either copyright or patents that Microsoft owns.

It is still easier for company’s to get the rights to distribute when DRM is involved.  This means that Netflix just decided to either take the easy route or decided they didn’t want to pay the price for DRM free content.

Which ever it is they now use technology for streaming that doesn’t support Linux.

In this case Netflix get’s a big F.

Netflix needs to know that as Linux users we are unsatisfied with this.  In order to accomplish this Michael G. Paez started a petition at petitiononline.com:

NEW YORK, NY, February 22, 2010 – These days it is harder than ever for independent bands to get noticed in the music world and break through to the next level.

That’s why when New York City-based rock/rap group Shinobi Ninja created their app for the iPhone and iPod Touch, they knew it had to be not only new and different, but also a property that would help market their unique brand to their fans, and even expand their fan base. Perhaps the biggest positive development for the band has been the industry reaction to Shinobi Ninja since the app released on February 1, 2010. “We had A&R requests from three major record labels and several booking agents the day after our app released,” said Machinist. “That was way beyond what we’d hoped or even dreamed.”

“Everybody’s using social media to connect with fans, but until we came along there were few bands that were building apps that were good at driving deeper fan engagement with their music and their overall brands,” said manager Stephen Sternschein. “Our app has already begun to help us achieve our goals of bringing our current fans closer to us, and it’s expanding our fan base far beyond New York City, to places as far away as Asia and the U.K.”

Shinobi Ninja has realized a 10 percent conversion rate from the free “lite” version of the game to the full retail version (i.e., users downloaded the free app then paid to download the retail version), which compares favorably to the industry standard conversion rate of half a percent to five percent for iPhone apps. According to Sternschein, “our conversion rate is so much higher than average, because we’ve been focusing mostly on our strong fan base for initial sales, and we expect it to climb even higher, when we take it on the road to the South by Southwest Music Festival in a few weeks. It’s a great tool to help new fans discover the band and stay connected with us, once we’ve performed in their home towns.”

I have several HTPC’s that I’ve build to watch my downloaded content on. How ever in planning to buy a new TV I also want to downsize what is hooked up to the TV. We recently decabled and are now using an over-the-air digital TV box(DTV). This works great as we use a mix of Hulu, Boxee and downloads to get our TV shows. I’m not a big console gamer so we only have two of them, PS2 and Wii, hooked up to the TV. The DTV box we are using is small as well. The biggest piece of hardware in our media center is the HTPC. Which is a 4 HE PC case. I have a couple of Dell Optiplex SX280′s that I can use but I’m thinking of going even smaller.

Recently Boxee announced the Boxee box at CES

This is a really unique looking set-top box.

The Specs:
HDMI
Optical Audio
RCA Stereo Audio
WiFi (802.11n)
Ethernet
2 USB Ports
SD Cart Slot
RF Remote
QWERTY Keyboard

The Boxee box will also be able to play 10.1 flash video. It can do this because of the Nvidia Tegra 2 chipset it has inside. It also has a really nice remote which will also be available as a loose purchase for other Boxee users.

The Boxee box will be available the second quarter of 2010 for under $200 dollars. I hope to be able to get this box in when it releases(or maybe even a little sooner) for review.

Apple TV is still a good option

Apple TV is still a good option I really like the size. They are available for $189 for the 160GB version refurbished on the Apple website. Although I don’t have any QuickTime or iTunes library’s to sync with, when you install Boxee on the Apple TV it becomes as usable as any HTPC even for downloaded content.

Also websites like www.appletvhacks.net could make having an Apple TV a lot of fun.

There are a couple of other options but for now these should work. Now to decide what to use.

After only 6 months with Dreamhost I had all the downtime I can take.  I want people to be able to visit my blogs and Dreamhost stopped me from making that possible.  I canceled the Dreamhost PS and moved everything to a new VPS server hosted far far away from Dreamhost.

It’s not as cheap as Dreamhost but I have control over everything.  From initial install to optimizing the server.  It’s all me now.  A little daunting but exiting as well.

I have everything I had hosted with Dreamhost working, most sites now load faster then they used to.

I’ve been busy with a new pet project.  I was able to buy a great domain name in October and didn’t even have to think what the domain would be used for.  Check out fantasy-rpg.com for yourself. If you like playing video games online on the PC or otherwise check it out. It’s filled with information about and guides for MMOROG games.

I’ve been really lucky with fantasy-rpg.com one of the founder of Zownder.com was looking for a new home and I’m pleased to announce the Zownder.com team is now working with fantasy-rpg.com to bring you the best in MMORPG and gaming news.

In the months to come you will probably see more changes I might change the theme again on madberry.org but that’s a big maybe because I really like the theme that is on here right now.

The lines in /etc/network/interfaces have changed from:

wpa-conf /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf
wpa-driver wext

to:

pre-up wpa_supplicant -Dwext -iwlan0 -c/etc/wpa_supplicant.conf -B
post-down killall -q wpa_supplicant

Also if you where using :

wpa_supplicant -Dndiswrapper -iwlan0 -c/etc/wpa_supplicant.conf -B

then this now has to be changed to:

wpa_supplicant -Dwext -iwlan0 -c/etc/wpa_supplicant.conf -B

Or you will get a “Unsupported driver ndiswrapper” error.  I’m sure I will come across more that doesn’t work I will post the solutions as I find them.

I decided madberry.org needed a new design.  Please hang in there as I fix small errors that have occurred because of this design update.  I should have most of them worked out by tomorrow.

Problem With Code

At the moment I have a problem with all code in the website.  The code cannot be copied.  I am working to fix this problem right now.

Slow Loading

Website seems to be loading slow.  I’m turning of some plugins and revising some Javascript in the site to speed it up.

Today Alpha One is released and traditionally this is only an alternate. No live cd’s yet.

The Karmic Koala Promise

For Karmic Koala the cloud concept will be worked out more and Canocial is promising an OS that will use near to zero watts when in  idle mode.  The look is said to change as well. A rumor has been started that the brown will finally be ditched. With a new smooth flicker free start-up and the new development kernel mode settings that it will bring, it might give us a totally new start-up environment.  With the new graphical boot, the login experience will also get a work over in its look.

More speed improvements are promised as well.  The Jaunty netbook version starts in 25 seconds.  Canocial wants to improve this.   The new version will include the newest and latest Moblin technology.

The new desktop should have a designers touch all over it.  Which should make me happy.  I’m not sure if it will make me switch from Kubuntu to Ubuntu.  But I will take a close look at it when, the first Live CD is released.

• The boot loader now supports motherboards with BIOSes that reserve large amounts of base memory (typically for on board RAID controllers). Note: In order to be able to take advantage of this improvement under Windows Vista, you will have to install Service Pack 1 or higher first. Service Pack 1 for Windows Vista resolved an issue causing a shortage of free base memory during system boot.  (Windows Vista/XP/2008/2003)
• Mounting using the ‘Auto-Mount Devices‘ feature may take significantly less time as partitions containing unencrypted files systems are now skipped.  (Windows)
• When volumes that are mounted as read-only or removable are saved as favorite volumes. They are mounted as read-only and/or removable when ‘Mount Favorite Volumes‘ is used.
• When a multiple-pass wipe algorithm is selected when performing in-place encryption of a non-system volume, the header areas will be wiped before the encrypted headers are written to the disk. Keeping personal and corporate files saved is important.  Truecrypt is a great way to protect these files.  If you haven’t checked it out yet, you should do it now. Truecrypt is compatible with Linux, Mac OS X and Windows.

Unetbootin Install Linux Distro’s On A Flash Drive With Out Hassle

After burning a million CD’s I decided to search for a better solution.  I found Unetbootin. Unetbootin will automatically download and install Linux iso’s to your USB flash drive.  I’m always looking for applications that make my life easier.  Unetbootin saves me the time of having to burn every distro I want to try to disk.  Let’s face it, we are still in an economic crisis and saving money is a good thing.

Installation

There are two ways to install Unetbootin.  You can install it out of the repositories using Synaptic or adept.  But this will to allow you to install the latest version of Kubuntu Jaunty Jackalope 9.04.  For that you have to install the version you can download from their website.  For the website version there is no install necessary.  The download is a executable file.  Download the file and make it executable make sure you are in the directory you downloaded it to:
In terminal:

sudo chmod +x ~/Desktop/unetbootin-linux*

Or the point and click way:
Right click on unetbootin-linux-323 and select properties. Click the Permissions tab mark the box in front of Is executable. Now you are able to click on the binary. A password prompt will pop-up put in your sudo password. Unetbootin will start and you are ready to make bootable flash drives.

Features

You can select a distribution to put on the flash drive as said, this will download and install the distro to the flash drive.  Select an iso that you have already downloaded and install that to the flash drive.  Or make a custom Kernel install with your own Initrd and options.  Select the drive (it also can install distros to the hardrive) and click OK.  Unetbootin will now download the iso, then install it to the flash drive.

Conclusion

Unetbootin is a great application. The only thing I wish it had out of the box, is support for multiple distro’s.  It does have a boot manager so it should not be to difficult to support.  I might be able to figure out how to do this.  If so I’ll write another blog post about it.
